History of Bitcoin in Australia
Australia has taken a proactive approach to cryptocurrency regulation. In 2017, the Australian government officially recognized Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as legal property. According to the ACCC's Scamwatch, Australians lost a record $221 million to investment scams in 2022, with cryptocurrency scams accounting for $148.3 million of those losses. This represented an 162.5% increase from 2021.
Notable scams included the 2021 'pig butchering' crypto romance scams, where victims lost millions after being convinced to invest in fake crypto trading platforms.
