History of Bitcoin in Australia

Australia has taken a proactive approach to cryptocurrency regulation. In 2017, the Australian government officially recognized Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as legal property. The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) began requiring cryptocurrency exchanges to register and comply with AML/CTF obligations in 2018.

In 2019, the Australian Tax Office (ATO) released comprehensive guidelines on cryptocurrency taxation, clarifying that cryptocurrencies are considered assets for capital gains tax purposes. Australia has also seen significant crypto adoption, with a 2021 Independent Reserve Cryptocurrency Index survey showing that 28.8% of Australians own or have owned cryptocurrency.

Notable scams included the 2021 'pig butchering' crypto romance scams, where victims lost millions after being convinced to invest in fake crypto trading platforms.
