History of Bitcoin in Israel
Israel has played a significant role in Bitcoin's development. In 2013, Israeli startup GetGems raised $400,000 to build one of the first Bitcoin social messaging apps. A major milestone came in 2016 when the Israeli government announced it would begin taxing cryptocurrencies as property. In 2017, the Israeli Diamond Exchange launched a cryptocurrency to help facilitate international diamond trading.
In March 2019, the Israeli Supreme Court ruled in favor of Bits of Gold exchange in a landmark case against Bank Leumi, preventing the bank from blocking cryptocurrency transactions. By 2022, Israel's largest bank, Bank Hapoalim, began accepting Bitcoin and cryptocurrency trading through its partnership with Paxos.

Bitcoin Scams in Israel
In 2021, Israeli police arrested brothers Eli and Assaf Gigi for allegedly stealing over $100 million in a sophisticated cryptocurrency theft scheme involving the Bitfinex hack. That same year, Israeli authorities arrested Moshe Hogeg, owner of Beitar Jerusalem Football Club, for alleged cryptocurrency fraud worth hundreds of millions of dollars through his ICO ventures Stox and Leadcoin.
In 2022, the Israel Securities Authority (ISA) cracked down on Celsius Network before its collapse, investigating the platform months before it froze customer assets. The ISA had previously fined several unlicensed crypto trading platforms, including UFX Global and XFX Trade, for operating without proper licenses in 2020.
