History of Bitcoin in Sweden
Sweden has seen several notable developments in Bitcoin's history. In 2012, KnCMiner, one of the largest Bitcoin mining companies at the time, was founded in Stockholm. The company raised over $32 million in funding before declaring bankruptcy in 2016 due to increased mining competition. In 2013, the Swedish Tax Agency issued its first ruling on Bitcoin taxation, classifying it as an asset subject to capital gains tax.
In 2015, BTCX became Sweden's first regulated cryptocurrency exchange. A significant milestone occurred in 2017 when Nasdaq Stockholm listed Bitcoin Exchange Traded Notes (ETNs), making Sweden one of the first countries to offer regulated crypto investment products. In 2019, the Swedish central bank, Riksbank, partnered with Accenture to pilot the e-krona project, exploring central bank digital currencies alongside Bitcoin.

Bitcoin Scams in Sweden
In 2018, Swedish citizen Roger Nils-Jonas Karlsson was arrested in Thailand for operating a $16 million cryptocurrency investment scam that defrauded over 3,500 victims. He was later sentenced to 15 years in prison by a U.S. court in 2021. In 2019, the Swedish cryptocurrency exchange QuickBit accidentally exposed sensitive user data of 300,000 customers through an unprotected MongoDB database.
In 2021, Swedish authorities investigated Milton Group, a cryptocurrency investment scam that defrauded victims of approximately 200 million SEK ($24 million). The same year, the Swedish Economic Crime Authority raided several locations connected to a cryptocurrency pyramid scheme that had allegedly defrauded investors of over 15 million SEK ($1.8 million).
